A Civil Engineering Technician provides technical support to engineers and other construction professionals in the design, development, construction, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of the built environment and infrastructure.

A Civil Engineering Technician’s role will involve assisting in the development of technical solutions, using appropriate software and data to solve technical problems, contribution to planning, schedules and budgets, operating quality systems, health safety and risk management and checking technical aspects of site activity.

Technicians will be required to have a broad skills base to work in areas which include sustainable construction, structural integrity, geotechnics, materials, tunnelling, marine and coastal engineering, water, waste management, flood management, transportation and power.

 

Assessment

Apprentices will attend college on a day release basis at FutureSkills at MediaCityUK, Dakota Avenue, M50 2PU, where knowledge will be developed via taught sessions, online learning and self-study. The areas of knowledge to be delivered are:

  • Principles of construction
  • Design within construction
  • Technology within construction
  • Health and safety
  • Surveying within construction
  • Detailing within construction
  • Management within construction
  • Site engineering
  • Mathematics within construction
  • Civil engineering

Portfolio of Evidence

A portfolio of evidence will be developed by the apprentice with the support of the assessor. This portfolio will confirm the knowledge which has been developed, the skills which are regularly applied in the workplace and the behaviors demonstrated to be a successful Civil Engineering Technician.

End Point Assessment 

Apprentices are required to undertake end point assessment. This will be a set project brief, a written short report, a presentation and a structured interview to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviors developed over the programme.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at Grades A*-C including maths (grade B), English and science, or their equivalent.

Apprentices must be in suitable employment and have the opportunity to develop the required knowledge, skills and behaviors aligned to this apprenticeship standard. Assessments will be carried out with employers to determine suitability.
