Sustainable practices are at the heart of what we do at Salford City College, which is why our Community Project team have set their sights on clearing and renovating a raised plant bed. The creative, innovative team members saw more than just a disused plant bed—but an opportunity for the catering department to grow their own fresh produce. Clearing the bed took a lot of hard work, but the team really went above and beyond in proving how much could be accomplished in only a short space of time. Before long, the overgrown plant bed was cleared and ready to be put to good use!

High quality, fresh ingredients are central to one of Worsley College’s biggest programmes: the catering department. This project, proposed by one of our Community Project team, was conceived with the hope that catering, and the Glass House restaurant, would one day be able to grow those high-quality ingredients right on our own doorstep. Reducing the distance between where the food is grown and the plate it ends up on is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can reduce emissions and the carbon footprint of our food, playing our part in contributing to a greener future.

We at Salford City College love to see these sorts of community driven initiatives spearheaded by students, teachers and members of the community. The team have made huge progress in making this plant bed a usable space in the near future, and the Culinary Arts students are really excited about the possibility of fresh, home grown produce to make their already stunning menu even more delicious.
