Careers Information, Advice and Guidance is available to students both before and during their studies. Support for students in their next steps is integral to what we do and as a student at SCC Group, you will be provided with opportunities to engage with industry and HE professionals so that you are supported to make informed decisions about your future.
When you come to one of our Colleges for an Open Evening or at Enrolment, there will be a careers adviser available to help you make your decisions.
Your learning programmes will embed the development of employability skills, provide access to industry professionals, the opportunity to participate in site visits, specialist industry workshops, university visits and work experience. Careers Advisors, teachers and personal tutors will also be available to provide you with additional advice and guidance as part of your programme of study.
SCC Group adheres to the Gatsby Benchmark Framework and is accredited by the Matrix Quality Standard. The nominated Careers Lead at SCC Group is Paul Healey, Head of Destinations, Careers and Employability.
Individual Careers Guidance
If you are a student at SCC Group, you can arrange an individual careers appointment to start exploring your ideas and options or discuss a career issue in depth. Our college career advisers are professionally qualified and accredited by the Matrix Quality Standard for advice and support services. They can help you in every stage of your decision-making, career choice and progression. Discussions are confidential and are only shared between the advisers and the student. Appointments can be arranged through Student Services at each college.
Careers Resources
In addition to printed resources, such as university prospectuses and guidance books, students have access to the Careers section of the Virtual Learning Environment in college – CANVAS. The Careers page on CANVAS provides students with access to guides, video clips and links to UCAS, comparison websites, personal statement writing, Student Finance, job seeking, apprenticeships and much more. The College also has a number of Careers IT Packages such as ‘Higher Ideas’, Kudos and ‘Adult Directions’, which can help students to identify potential careers and courses.
Careers Education & Tutorial Programme
A range of careers education activities are delivered by personal tutors through the weekly tutorial programme (Tutor Groups). These include career-planning, preparation for Higher Education, personal statement writing, student, job seeking, apprenticeships and social media. Personal tutors work closely with the Careers team in college to ensure that students are provided with the right information, advice and guidance that is appropriate for them.
Higher Education & University Applications
We are committed to providing advice and guidance all the way through your journey to your chosen university course. Your careers adviser can help you individually and in group sessions to complete your UCAS application. Students, who are eligible, can also apply to be part of the University Access Schemes that the college promotes.
Employment & The Labour Market
The Careers team and Curriculum staff continue to develop links with our local employers and can help you gain part-time employment or support you in looking for an apprenticeship. Labour market trends play an important part in the decision-making process for anyone planning their future career or looking at a career change. There is a broad range of local and national information available to help you make those all-important decisions and to explore the opportunities that may be available in the future. Advice & Support to Ex-Students
The Careers team can support recent ex-students with an academic reference for UCAS applications. (Please note that we require five working days to guarantee that your reference will be inputted onto your UCAS form). To ensure we can complete and add your reference to your UCAS form before the deadline date you must contact us prior to the Christmas break. Please contact the careers adviser at the college you attended to arrange this or email careers@salfordcc.ac.uk stating which college you attended.
