Outline

The course allows you to explore a wide range of textile practices, materials and processes while developing your own creative interests and specialist skills.

Contemporary Textile Practice

Explore contemporary approaches to textiles and investigate the work of artists, designers and makers to inform your own creative practice.

Surface Design and Material Exploration

Experiment with materials and processes including fabric and yarn dyeing, printing, embroidery and fabric manipulation.

Constructed Textiles

Develop practical skills in processes including knitting, weaving and felting, alongside sewing machine techniques for fabric manipulation and garment construction.

Drawing, Research and Creative Development

Use drawing, research and experimentation to generate and develop ideas, helping you create individual and considered textile outcomes.

Sustainable Textiles

Explore sustainable approaches to textile practice and consider how materials and processes can be used within contemporary creative work.

You will apply your skills and knowledge to a chosen pathway, which could include Fine Art Textiles, Fashion, Illustration or Surface Pattern.

Enrichment opportunities

The course has links with the local community and creative practitioners, with opportunities for students to exhibit their work locally.

You will also have opportunities to take part in:

These experiences allow you to encounter creative work first-hand and gather inspiration for your own practice.

Assessment

The course is assessed through two components across the two-year course.

Coursework

Coursework accounts for 60% of your overall qualification.

You will develop practical and creative work throughout the course, demonstrating your ability to research, experiment with materials and processes and develop individual textile outcomes.

Externally Set Assignment

The Externally Set Assignment accounts for the remaining 40% of your qualification.

Together, these components allow you to demonstrate your creative development, practical textile skills and ability to develop ideas into finished outcomes.

Entry Requirements

A combination of 5 Grade 4’s and 5’s or above at GCSE (including maths and English). * One Vocational Qualification in a related subject area will be considered in place of a GCSE. Subject Specific Entry Requirements: A creative GCSE subject at Grade 4 or above. Alternatively, a creative portfolio of three pieces to discuss at enrolment.
