Fine Art Photography (Vocational)

Outline

The course gives you the opportunity to explore traditional, digital and experimental approaches to photography while developing your own creative identity.

Experimental Photography

Explore alternative and camera-less photographic techniques, experimenting with different processes to produce original creative outcomes.

Analogue Photography

Discover black and white photography and gain practical experience working in the college’s darkroom.

Sound

Explore image sonification and experiment with creating audio from your own photographs, allowing you to investigate the relationship between visual imagery and sound.

Industry Techniques

Use the photography studio to create industry-style images and develop your understanding of professional photographic practice.

Alongside your creative work, you will develop technical camera skills, including using camera settings, lighting, lenses and photographic equipment confidently. You will also build image-editing skills using software including Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom and explore photographers, artistic movements and visual styles.

Specialist facilities

You will have access to a range of specialist photography facilities and equipment, including:

• Cameras available to book out
• Large darkroom with 12 enlargers
• Photography studio
• Industry-standard studio lighting
• Mac-equipped rooms
• Full Adobe Creative Suite

These facilities allow you to experiment with different photographic processes and develop experience using equipment and software relevant to professional creative practice.

Assessment

The course is assessed through 100% coursework, which is internally marked and externally moderated.

Practical Creative Projects and Digital Portfolios

You will complete practical photography projects and develop digital portfolios that demonstrate your technical skills, experimentation and creative development.

• Externally moderated Final Major Project

This practical approach allows you to demonstrate your development as a photographer while building a professional portfolio that can support progression to university or employment.

Entry Requirements

Students will need a minimum of five grade 4s at GCSE, which must include a grade 4 in English. Students who enrol on this course will typically have a GCSE (or vocational) qualification in a creative subject. Applicants who do not have a creative qualification will need to demonstrate that they have the necessary knowledge, skills and interest to succeed on the course, usually via a portfolio of creative work produced outside of the school environment. Additional Information: We will consider 1 Vocational qualification in place of a GCSE as long as a grade 4 is achieved in English.
