Economics (A-Level)

Outline

The course is organised around four themes.

Themes 1 and 2

You will be introduced to the nature of economics and explore:

• How markets work
• Why markets can fail
• The role of government in the economy
• The UK economy

You will begin to understand how consumers, businesses and governments make choices and how these decisions influence wider economic outcomes.

Themes 3 and 4

As the course develops, you will explore:

• How businesses grow and compete
• The labour market
• Government intervention in markets
• International trade
• Inequality within and between countries
• Emerging and developing economies
• Public finances
• The role and impact of the financial sector

These themes will help you understand the connections between businesses, governments, financial institutions and economies around the world.

Assessment

You will complete three examinations across the two-year course.

The assessments will require you to apply economic knowledge, interpret data, analyse issues and evaluate different arguments before reaching well-supported conclusions.

Entry Requirements

A combination of 5 Grade 4’s and 5’s or above at GCSE (including maths and English). * One Vocational Qualification in a related subject area will be considered in place of a GCSE. Subject Specific Entry Requirements: GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths at Grade 5.
