Dance (A-Level)

Outline

The course combines practical performance and choreography with the critical study of professional dance works.

Unit 1 – Performance

Develop your technical and expressive skills as a dancer, demonstrating physical competency, artistry and performance quality.

You will work on developing the skills needed to become a confident and expressive performer.

Unit 2 – Choreography

Create and refine your own original choreography in response to a stimulus.

You will apply choreographic skills and creative processes to develop ideas and turn them into a finished piece of work.

Unit 3 – Critical Engagement

Study professional dance works and analyse key areas including:

• Choreography
• Performance
• Lighting
• Costume
• Accompaniment
• Production Elements

You will explore and evaluate a range of prescribed professional works, including influential contemporary choreographers and companies such as Rambert.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a combination of practical performance, choreography and a written examination.

Performance and Choreography

You will be assessed through practical performances that allow you to demonstrate your technical, expressive and choreographic skills.

This will test your ability both as a performer and as a choreographer, applying the practical and creative skills developed throughout the course.

Written Examination

You will also complete a written examination assessing your critical engagement with dance.

This will require you to demonstrate your ability to analyse and evaluate professional dance works and consider elements such as choreography, performance and production.

Entry Requirements

A combination of 5 Grade 4’s and 5’s or above at GCSE (including maths and English). * One Vocational Qualification in a related subject area will be considered in place of a GCSE. Please note: Some dance experience is essential for successfully completing our A-level Dance qualification. Students are required to successfully complete an interview and audition.
