Outline

The course combines scientific theory with practical and analytical skills used within healthcare, diagnostics and medical research.

Human Anatomy & Physiology

Explore the structure and function of major body systems, physiological processes and how these are monitored in clinical settings.

Pathology & Disease

Investigate the causes, development and progression of disease, including:

• Infection
• Inflammation
• Cancer
• Genetic conditions

Medical Investigation & Diagnostics

Develop your understanding of techniques used to investigate and diagnose medical conditions, including laboratory techniques, microscopy, biochemical testing, haematology, microbiology and diagnostic interpretation.

Medical Research & Ethics

Explore how scientific research is conducted within medicine, including study design, data handling, ethics and regulation.

Health Practice & Clinical Skills

Develop your understanding of communication, patient interaction, safety, infection control and applied medical procedures.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a combination of two written examinations and coursework.

Examinations

You will complete two written examinations during the course.

These will allow you to demonstrate your scientific knowledge and understanding alongside skills such as data handling, interpretation, critical thinking and analysis.

Coursework

Coursework is worth 42% of your final grade.

Your coursework will provide opportunities to apply the practical, analytical and scientific skills developed throughout your studies.

Entry Requirements

Typically, learners are expected to have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-5 (A*-C), including English and Science. Some centres may require additional criteria such as an interview or prior experience in science subjects. A strong interest in science and healthcare is recommended.
