Outline

The course is divided into three main areas, combining mathematical theory with practical applications and real-world problem-solving.

Pure Mathematics

Develop your understanding of:

  • Algebra
  • Functions
  • Calculus
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Sequences
  • Numerical Methods

You will build the mathematical knowledge and techniques needed to approach and solve increasingly complex problems.

Statistics

Learn how to collect, represent and analyse data, use probability and statistical distributions and draw conclusions from real-world data.

Mechanics

Apply mathematics to real-world situations involving forces, motion and energy.

You will use mathematical models to understand and predict how objects behave, developing your ability to apply mathematical ideas to physical situations.

Enrichment opportunities

You will have opportunities to take part in enrichment activities that extend your mathematical learning beyond the classroom.

These include:

  • External mathematics competitions
  • MEI workshops
  • Guest lectures from the University of Oxford

These experiences give you opportunities to challenge your problem-solving abilities and explore mathematics beyond the A-Level curriculum.

Progression

A-Level Mathematics can support progression into a wide range of university courses and careers where numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills are highly valued.

Finance and Business

You could progress towards careers including:

  • Banking
  • Investment
  • Accountancy
  • Economics
  • Actuarial Science
  • Business Analysis

Engineering and Technology

The mathematical modelling and problem-solving skills developed through the course can support progression into areas including:

  • Engineering
  • Computing
  • Data Science
  • Technology

Science and Research

Mathematics can also support progression into areas where mathematical skills are used to understand and model the world, including:

  • Physics
  • Medicine
  • Research
  • Environmental Science

Assessment

The course is assessed through three written examinations.

Examinations

You will complete three written examinations at the end of the two-year course.

The examinations will assess your mathematical knowledge and your ability to apply techniques, solve problems, reason logically, analyse data and use mathematical models.

Entry Requirements

Students will need a minimum of five grade 5s or above, including English Language. In addition, students must have a grade 6 in GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics. Students wishing to study this subject must also have a G-Score of 6. Ideally, this subject should be taken alongside other subjects that fortify the skill set, such as Biology, Mathematics, or Geography. Please Note: There will be an induction assessment to ascertain mathematical aptitude in the first 2-3 weeks of this course.* One Vocational Qualification in a related subject area will be considered in place of a GCSE.
