Outline
The course is divided into three components.
Component 1 – Varieties of Film and Filmmaking
You will explore Hollywood and British film, developing your understanding of how filmmakers create meaning and how films are shaped by their social, cultural and production contexts.
You will learn how to analyse film closely and develop informed arguments about the creative choices made by filmmakers.
Component 2 – Global Filmmaking Perspectives
Broaden your understanding of cinema by studying filmmaking beyond mainstream Hollywood.
Areas of study include:
- Global film
- Documentary
- Silent cinema
- Experimental cinema
You will encounter different filmmaking styles, traditions and perspectives while developing your appreciation of film as an international art form.
Component 3 – Production
You will apply what you have learned through your own creative work, developing a short film or screenwriting project.
This gives you the opportunity to explore storytelling, visual communication and the filmmaking process while developing your own creative ideas.
Progression
The combination of analytical and creative skills developed through Film Studies can support progression to university, apprenticeships and a wide range of careers.
Film and media industries
You could progress towards practical and creative roles such as:
- Director
- Editor
- Cinematographer
- Sound professional
- Other film and media production roles
Advertising and marketing
An understanding of audiences, visual communication, storytelling and media production can also support progression into advertising, marketing and related creative industries.
Further study and wider careers
Film Studies can provide preparation for university or apprenticeships in film, media and related subjects, as well as routes into teaching and other careers that value communication, creativity, analysis and research.
Assessment
You will complete:
Two written examinations
Each examination is 2 hours and 30 minutes long.
Coursework
You will complete a practical production component, putting your creative and technical understanding into practice.
Entry Requirements
A combination of 5 Grade 4’s and 5’s or above at GCSE (including maths and English). * One Vocational Qualification in a related subject area will be considered in place of a GCSE.
