Outline

Throughout the programme, students develop an understanding of key topics including child development, safeguarding, play and learning, supporting children’s development, positive behaviour, observation and planning, supporting children with additional needs, health and nutrition, and the importance of creating safe and stimulating environments for children. Learners also explore the responsibilities involved in parenting and caring for babies and young children.
The qualification combines theoretical learning with practical understanding of childcare practice and includes units that can be completed in real work environments. A mandatory placement element of the course is required where students will gain valuable insight into how children learn, develop and thrive, helping them prepare for further study or future employment within the childcare sector

Progression

Successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma can lead to further study in Early Years including Level 3 courses, in particular the T Level in Early Years as well as Apprenticeships.
The course provides an excellent starting point for those wishing to pursue careers in childcare, education and early years settings. Future career opportunities may include roles such as nursery practitioner, preschool practitioner, nursery school assistant, reception class support worker, or other childcare-related positions following further training and qualifications

Assessment

Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence and practical observations in a real work environment. Learners will complete a range of assessment methods which may include:
  • Written assignments
  • Professional discussions
  • Practical observations in placement
  • Witness testimonies
  • Reflective accounts
  • Work products and evidence from placement
Skills-based units must be demonstrated in an early years setting through direct observation.
