Loneliness is never easy to live with, but at Christmas, it can become worse than ever. Health & Social Care students at Eccles came together this year to ease the pain in their community and find a way to bring festive cheer to the hospital beds of some patients at the Royal Bolton Hospital who may have to stay in over Christmas this year. This heartwarming Christmas box initiative was aimed at supporting lonely patients during the festive season.   Evolving through the NHS Trust’s Volunteering programme, building on the strong collaboration between Eccles College and the Trust, this initiative has encouraged students to explore the broader connections between social care and emotional wellbeing. Mental health is a crucial part of overall growth and wellbeing, and for many people, the Christmas period is one of the hardest times of the year to find strength and solace in their mental health. Understanding how they can help with loneliness at Christmas time has been a really illuminating learning experience for the students.   Opportunities like these also provide crucial work experience, building communication skills and learning how to interact with service users and patients. This project helps the student to enhance their employability and deepen their understanding of patient needs, all while performing a public good for the community. These students are making a meaningful impact through this initiative and bringing joy to those who need it the most.
