Programme Summary

Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary Education across all age ranges, encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning, either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, knowing their learning objectives, and staying on task in order to make progress.

Promoting self-belief, social inclusion and a high self-esteem play an integral part to pupils’ well-being; ensuring pupils thrive in a positive, nurturing, and safe environment. It is an active role, supporting the pupils to access the curriculum. Teaching Assistants are good role models, act with honesty and integrity, take part in team meetings, contribute to planning and class activities. Promoting fundamental british values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, and positive behaviours are crucial in contributing to improved pupil progress and development.

How is it delivered and assessed?

Elements of learning can be face-to-face tutorials by visit or remote digital means, directed study and research, learning in the workplace via practical demonstration, shadowing, instruction, simulation or by way of courses and reflection.

Assessment methods may include question and answer, work products, observation of practice, witness accounts, recognition of prior learning, or professional discussions.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English (unless previously achieved)
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in mathematics (unless previously achieved)

There are no mandatory Teaching Assistant qualifications named in this standard, however, there is the option of including a Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching & Learning.

End Point Assessment 

The end point assessment will consist of:

  • A practical observation with Q&A
  • A professional discussion supported by a portfolio of evidence

Entry Requirements

  • English and maths – Level 1

Apprentices must be in suitable employment have the opportunity to develop all required knowledge, skills and behaviours aligned to this apprenticeship standard.
