This is a Level 3 Access to HE course which is designed to prepare learners for progression to university. The course is academic and students who successfully complete the course receive a Diploma which comprises 20 level 3 credits. Students study a range of Psychology, Social Work and Sociology units each with a 3-credit value.The duration of the course is one academic year (September – June) and students who complete traditionally apply to study vocational courses at University (such as psychology and counselling/social work/social policy/teaching) or academic courses (such as psychology/sociology). The course tends to recruit students from 18 years upwards who are usually from the Salford/surrounding areas. The topics that have been selected for the course include a range of psychology/sociology/social work subjects which are designed for students who have not necessarily studied the subject before, and a range of science units which will add depth and breadth to students’ overall understanding of social sciences. Additionally, students study several developmental units such as developing presentation skills, research skills and using ICT. The course is designed to equip students with a range of skills which will allow them to progress on to higher education. Students who are enrolled on the course are expected to have GCSE maths and English (or equivalent). The students will also have the opportunity to work on assessments within the classroom with the support and guidance of the tutor. There are additional drop-in study support sessions for those who require further guidance. Lessons will embed study skills in order to develop student’s time-management and motivation/organisation skills. Lesson are discussion-orientated which will help develop and hone communication skills and build confidence.The course is designed for mature students who may have been out of education for some considerable time, and there is a strong focus on building a diversity of skills, not just academic but also practical skills such as confidence building, team work and organisation skills. The course teaches students how to learn and apply themselves and become more disciplined and focused. All of the skills will benefit learners and prepare them for the working environment work, further study and beyond.

Progression

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be equipped with the skills to progress directly into employment or to progress onto our Level 6 BA (Hons) Make-up Artistry Top up. The majority of our students choose to continue to study and complete their L6 Top up.
