College Friends Reunite At Eccles

Salford City College, Eccles Sixth Form Centre hosts a re-union of students from 1971-1975

On Saturday 10th July, students who left Eccles Grammar School, Wardley Grammar School and Eccles College between 1971 and 1975 met at Salford City College, Eccles Sixth Form Centre for a special reunion.

Up to 100 former students and staff of the college attended the event, which was the first full reunion for any of the colleges in Salford. As well as catching up on the last 30 years over a BBQ, guests had the opportunity to reminisce over old photographs and memorabilia which has been stored at the Eccles Sixth Form Centre. This included old admissions registers, photos, visitors’ books and drama programmes, all of which is still available to view, on request, at the college.

The reunion was instigated by former students Janet Nunn and Roger McDowell, who did an excellent job in contacting old colleagues about the event. As well as former students who are still local to the area, many had travelled some distance to be at the event, including from Greece, North Vietnam and Australia.

This reunion also served as the chance for Salford City College to launch its new Alumni association. The college hopes to get in touch with more of its former students, including from the former Salford, Pendleton and De La Salle Colleges, to organise more reunion events and to tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience. From champions of business and enterprise to chemical engineers to the chairman of retail giant, Matalan, there are many opportunities for current students of the college to learn from those who have gone before and all in attendance at the event were keen to show their support for the work of the college and its current students.

Roger McDowell, for example, who is now Chairman of several public and private businesses, has already been into the Eccles Sixth Form Centre to offer advice and guidance on new enterprise schemes being set up at the college. Roger commented: “The reunion was a great chance to meet old friends and catch up but more importantly it helps us reconnect with our old college and offers the opportunity to give something back to today’s young people.”
