This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the Graphic Design industry.

Students will be provided training in the essential skills of visual communication and will have the opportunity to explore a range of forms of visual communication including illustration, print, typography, lens based media, time based media and computer aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach, students will be provided a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields.

Course Outline

The course is delivered largely through practical work produced in response to time specific and industry related briefs. Practical work is supported with study of art and design history and contemporary professional practice. Emphasis is placed on the development of informed and creative responses leading to professional outcomes that meet the needs of the brief.

Projects will be enriched through professional guest speakers, visits to galleries and exhibitions as well as live / simulated live briefs.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the year. There will be a focus on portfolio development and ‘live’ project briefs, that mirror industry based scenarios.

Other Information

HNCs are a good stepping stone for students who wish to pursue HND, foundation degree or B.A. (Hons) Degree qualifications. The qualification is also suitable for those who wish to pursue professional practice in a range of careers in graphics, related industries, including design for advertising, desk top publishing, illustration and digital imaging.

Applicants should hold a level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 240 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma Merit Profile) and level 2 qualification in English and Maths. Mature Applicants will be considered on an individual basis. All candidates will be interviewed and expected to bring a portfolio of their work.
