No Barriers to Learning

As part of our aim to break down barriers to learning, we offer courses for everyone.

GCSE and Functional Skills

English and maths are considered to be the foundations of education and training in the UK, and Level 2 in these subjects is considered a pre-requisite. That is why we offer them, up to level 2, as a FREE course to all adults who haven’t previously gained a GCSE or achieved a grade D or less.

In fact, we know learning maths and English to a good level is so important that we want more people to have this opportunity. That is why for September entry we have added an extra 166 places on maths and English GCSE courses.

Functional Skills courses are available across a number of levels, so there will be a class to suit anyone’s needs. These courses will help you to build fundamental skills in the subject area, which are essential to find employment at any level and help you go on to study for a GCSE should you wish to.

We offer Functional Skills in ICT for those who need to learn the basics in computing for their career as well as maths and English, and also GCSE Biology.

Level 1 and 2 Courses

Level 1 and level 2 courses are equivalent to GCSEs. We offer a range of courses at this level including AAT, perfect for anyone looking to go into accounting or the financial industries. We also offer this level of courses in trades including plumbing, hairdressing and beauty therapy for those who may not have qualifications, but who would still like to get onto the career ladder.

Access Courses

Access to Higher Education courses do exactly as they say on the tin, help adult students access university courses. If your heart is set on going to university but you don’t have the qualifications, then an access course is for you.

An access course is equivalent to three A-levels and typically lasts one year. This makes them perfect for anyone who might have had time off from education or who left education without the usual qualifications for university access, such as A-levels or a BTEC.

Many access students go on to succeed at university and beyond, with a large number of students pursuing new careers in a variety of directions.

Our courses range from access to professions in science, creative writing, forensics, art, business, midwifery and construction, to name just some of what we offer.

Josh Ensor
Access to Professions in Engineering

“The Access Course has given me the self–confidence to apply to universities, whilst also providing other essential skills such as writing techniques, time management and mathematics. I have applied to study at the University of Leeds, a Russell Group University, to study physics with astrophysics. My ultimate goal is to work within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).”

Entry to Access

Think an access course might be for you but don’t have your level 2 qualifications such as GCSEs? Don’t worry, we also do Entry to Access courses that will get you where you need to be.

ESOL, English for Speakers of Other Languages

One major barrier many face is that English is not their first language, and their level of English may be basic, stopping them from progressing with their career or studies, in the UK.

But, we don’t feel this should stop someone from excelling, which is why we offer ESOL courses at a range of levels, right down to pre-entry.

Many of our former ESOL students have gone on to excel after completing our courses, going on to study at prestigious universities and into lucrative industries.

ESOL courses are extremely popular due to the success we have with our students. Because of this, we have added extra courses for the next academic year, so there is bound to be a class for you.

University courses

Our university courses, such as Foundation Degrees and HNCs are perfect for those who are not sure whether they want to commit to a full three or four-year degree programme. Once you have completed your Foundation Degree or HNC you can opt to top-up your qualification to a full Honours Degree or HND.

We also do PGCE courses for graduates who would like to go into teaching.

Get back into education

One of the main purposes of our courses is to get adults back into education. That’s anybody who is over 19 who may need additional or essential qualifications to continue their educational journey or enhance their career.

But, we realise getting back into education isn’t always as simple as finding the right course. That’s why we can help with an all manner of things. From childcare to costs and careers advice.

Childcare

You might be thinking, how can I possibly go back into education when I have children to take care of? Well, we can help with that too. Our childcare fund helps students aged 20-years or above by contributing towards the cost of their childcare.

To be eligible for the scheme, your childcare must be provided by an OFSTED registered provider and payments are made directly to them. You could receive up to £40 per day and the college might even pay up to £10 per day for before and after school club.*

If you would like to know if you are eligible, please contact student services by calling 0161 631 5000.

To be eligible for the bursary you must prove you are from a low-income family and in receipt of certain benefits.*

An Advanced Learner Loan is for an individual aged 19 or above who is undertaking qualification at Levels 3 to 6. The loans can give students access to financial support for the costs of their tuition fees, similar to the loans available for Higher Education courses.

Advanced Learner Loans can be applied for via Student Finance England.

‘£20.3 Million worth of Advanced Learner Loans are written off thanks to government incentive’

Thinking of taking an Access course? Well, thanks to a new government incentive you might be able to get your Advanced Learner Loan written off.

According to the Association of Colleges, more than £20 Million of Access loans were written off by the government in the 2017/18 academic year. Why? After your Access to Higher Education course is complete, if you use your new qualification to go on to study for a full-degree, once you have completed this degree, the cost of the Access course is written off – meaning you could get the qualification for free.
