Pendleton alumni to help young people design their perfect career

14 November 2017

Former students have been invited to talk college, careers and creativity at the Pendleton Graphic Design Alumni Exhibition event on November 21st.

Later this month, staff, students and some of the college’s incredibly successful alumni will be gathering to celebrate 10-years of success within the department.

Those who studied at Pendleton Sixth Form College, and who have since gone on to enjoy inspired careers in the graphic design industry, will be back where it all began, with their work on display to showcase to budding graphic designers. Whether currently studying or thinking of studying this inventive subject, talented creatives can use the event as an opportunity to network, with those who have excelled in the industry on hand to give guidance on accessing the broad range of careers a qualification in graphic design can lead to.

The event will also serve as the grand opening for the brand new, state-of-the-art facilities that have been built in the ashes of the devastation created by the fire at the college 18-months ago.

In May 2016 Pendleton Sixth Form College fell victim to a tragic fire, of which the Graphic Design Department was directly hit. Around 40 firefighters and eight fire crews battled the blaze that engulfed the C floor of the college, which in turn left the main design classroom in ruin.

Now, over a year later, the department has been transformed, with brand new iMacs, printers, HD projectors and bespoke furniture that would be the envy of any design studio. Staff and students alike now have facilities to be proud of, reward perhaps for the determination and unity demonstrated under challenging circumstances.

David Holcroft, Pendleton Sixth Form College Graphic Design Teacher of 10 years, said: “The wheels for this event started turning when we had the fire, as many of our former students got in touch to offer their support. It was lovely to know that so many of our former students look back on their time at Pendleton with such fondness and credit us with giving them the start they needed for their careers to really take off.

“We therefore thought it would be a nice opportunity to have an official opening of the studio as well as a celebration all of their success.”

Rachel Jarvis, Curriculum Leader for Creative Arts & Design, who has also been at Pendleton for a decade, added: “We are extremely proud of our former students and all they have accomplished since leaving college and are very excited to be bringing them all back together to listen to their stories and celebrate their work in this fantastic exhibition.”

The graphics team at Pendleton has invited a cohort of successful alumni to the event, they will not only be exhibiting their work to inspire guests, but will also be presenting talks on their careers and speaking to students and under 16s about their options in the future, including getting into university and into the industry.

David went on to say: “We are really proud of our history of success in graphic design. Of running exciting courses that work closely with industry and delivering live briefs to give students valuable experience whilst at college.

“As a result, our students have gone on to study at some of the best universities in the country; winning national design competitions and going on to prominent careers in a multitude of creative industries. This includes an animator at Aardman studios, a UX designer at the BBC and a published children’s author and illustrator.” – David Holcroft, Graphic Design Teacher

“We are hosting this exhibition because we want to celebrate their achievements, congratulate them on the successes they’ve had, and give them the opportunity to come back to where it all began for an emotional reopening of the studio.”

Rachel finished off by saying: “This is a must see show for any aspiring designers or anyone interested in creative arts and design!”

If you are interested in a career in the creative industries, then come along on November 21st to Pendleton Sixth Form College – event opens at 5.30pm.
