New Pre-Teaching Course gets university stamp of approval at launch event

5 May 2017

Salford City College has an exciting new course and it is university approved. In April, at Pendleton Sixth Form Centre, the college held a Pre-Teaching Information Evening to introduce the new course which will start in September 2017.

Those who attended the event had the opportunity to speak to course tutors about the course and how to get into teaching, and local universities were invited to speak about the opportunities for progression the course would provide.

Rebecca Parks, Head of Faculty for Academic Studies, who also spoke on the night said, “The event was a great success and really highlighted why the course is so unique. We invited three university guest speakers, all of which said how this course could lead a student to a place at university. They made it clear to all those who attended that if they did choose the Pre-Teaching Course then it would certainly help their applications stand out.”

Representatives from Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Cumbria and Edge Hill University all spoke about how to prepare for life as a teacher and what options students had in regards to routes into the profession. They talked about Higher Education entry requirements and relevant experience an applicant would need to be considered for a place at university, with the Pre-Teaching Course providing them with the perfect advantage.

The BTEC Level 3 National Diploma is ideal for those interested in a career in teaching as it not only gives a broad basis of study for the early years sector but it also incorporates a placement unit – allowing for hands on experience working in a primary school. The course can be completed in conjunction with other A-Level courses allowing students to get a taste of what a career in teaching is like, whilst still studying other subjects.

BTEC National Diplomas are the most widely recognised qualification for admission into Higher Education alongside A Levels, and as well as being university approved, the units in the course are supported by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) Early Educator Standards.
