Performing Arts Students to perform for prominent Hope Theatre Company
Performing Arts students from Salford City College’s Pendleton Sixth Form Centre, recently auditioned for a new touring production in collaboration with The Hope Theatre Company and Salford’s Integrated Youth Support Service.
With The Youth Support Service’s remit to organise a variety of activities for young people and Hope’s long track record in creating theatre that challenges perceptions and changes attitudes, the Acting students were asked to audition for a new play planned to tour Youth Centres around Salford, culminating in a performance at The Lowry Theatre this Summer.
Entitled This is Salford, this new verbatim play is based on interviews conducted with youth groups across Salford which discusses hate crime and discrimination. The play celebrates the city’s diverse community and uses true stories to create a unique picture of Salford in 2014. The interviews were conducted and edited by Adam Zane, artistic director of Hope Theatre Company and participants will work alongside Adam to stage the new play. Actors will play a variety of roles in the play including youth-workers, service-users and young people from a variety of backgrounds.
Chris Rice from the IYSS and Adam Zane were hugely impressed with the standard of the Acting students. They had ‘great fun’ and were really pleased to see the students bringing something on paper ‘to life’ in such an enthusiastic way. Adam Zane said, “I thought you were all fantastic so we would love to work with you all”.
Originally, the plan was to cast ten roles, but subsequently they offered parts to all sixteen students who took part in the audition. This is not a first for the Performing Arts Department’s aspiring Actors, as Footlights Theatre Company requested more students than they planned to cast for a production of The Queen is Dead, at The Lowry Theatre at Easter this year.
Kevin Rowntree, Curriculum Leader for Acting, was delighted with the results saying “Once again, this certainly recognises the great standards our students aspire to, and the positive impressions they are making on industry professionals. I am delighted that they will all have the opportunity to be involved in this fantastic show!”
