Apprentice Support

Salford City College’s Apprenticeship Team is very unique in that it employs two Apprentice Support Officers, whose main focus is to support all our Apprentices throughout their time with the College.  It is a pastoral care role and they attempt to introduce themselves personally to all 16-18 year old Apprentices within the first six weeks of their Apprenticeship by liaising with their employers.  They also send introductory emails to all other 19+ Apprentices so they have their contact details should they need them.

In some cases the Assessor will refer the Apprentice to the Apprenticeship Support Officers and they will arrange to meet up with them to discuss how to move forward. In others, support needs will become evident during initial contact with the Apprentice. In all cases, the Apprenticeship Support Officers will work closely with the Apprentice, Assessor and employer to try and find the best solution.

In the past the Apprenticeship Support Officers have found that some Apprentices will open up to them in ways that they wouldn’t always to their line manager or colleagues, and as a result, they are often best placed to get them back on track and to them ultimately achieving their Apprenticeship.

Issues that Apprentice Support Officers have helped with:

  • CV writing and job applications
  • Budgeting & financial issues
  • Emotional and social difficulties
  • Health issues
  • Family and relationship issues
  • Help with housing
