What opportunities for learning and getting qualified are on offer?

Qualification courses at Salford City College are divided into four levels of difficulty - Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced and Higher.

You can choose from a range of subjects designed to help you get qualified in Skill Sectors such as:

  • Construction & Building Services
  • Creative Industries
  • Teaching and Supporting Learning
  • Health, Care & Counselling
  • Financial Services
  • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapies
  • Information Technology
  • Speaking Modern Languages
  • Functional & Basic Skills in English & Maths
  • Learning for leisure & personal development

What are the different ways of studying and learning when you are an adult and may be at work?

You can come to a College Centre or Community venue or you can study in your workplace.

You can take an examination at the end or you can be assessed on a portfolio of coursework and evidence of how well you have used your skills in practice.

You can learn with others in a class or by yourself with one-to-one support.

You can learn on-line, flexibly, when it suits you.

On some courses there are no examinations or assessments.

Which level is suitable for me?

Foundation courses - if you have no qualifications, GCSE grades of E-F or you need hep with your functional skills in English or Maths.

Intermediate courses - if you have some knowledge of the subject area and a reasonable level of functional skills. You may also need to be employed in order to demonstrate putting your skills into practice at work.

Advanced courses (equivalent to GCE A Levels) - you need with an Intermediate qualification or to be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of skill and ability to start at Advanced level. You may also need to be employed so that you can demonstrate putting your skills into practice at work.

Higher courses - are available if you already have an Advanced or Level 3 qualification. You may also need to be working in the relevant Skill Sector.

How much does it cost?

As a rough guide, tuition fees are £2.50 an hour for most qualifications (government provides a subsidy for UK residents). There may also be fees to pay to an Examinations or Awarding Body.

There are no fees to pay:

  • For anyone under 19 or for all courses marked *.
  • For some Intermediate courses where you are not already qualified and for some Advanced courses where you are Not already qualified and are under 25 years of age on the day your course starts.
  • On most courses if you are in receipt of a means tested Benefit, and in this case the College will also heavily subsidise your exam fees.
  • If you are on a low income you may be eligible for Learner Support Fund subsidy to help with any fee or other cost of attending College such as childcare, transport and equipment.
